Dry Spell would end by 29th Dec in northern half of country. Winter rains to start from 29th
A westerly rain bearing system is entering Pakistan. It would start affecting upper parts of country by 29th and yield light to moderate rainfall over northern parts of country including northern KPK, Barani areas, north-eastern Punjab and Kashmir.
The system may persist till 31st December and may produce 10-15 mm of rainfall in Barani areas and Kashmir. Northern Areas of KPK and eastern Punjab may receive few millimeters of rain. This may help alleviate agro-meteorological drought conditions prevailing in rainfed areas due to long dry spell since October 19, 2010. |

As per prediction, scattered rainfall of light to moderate intensity was recorded in upper KPK, Northern Punjab, Giglit-Biltistan and Kashmir from 29th to 31st Dec 2010. The Rainfall recorded at various PMD observatories is as under |

Good Rains/Snowfall predicted from 3rd – 8th February, 2011 in Pakistan The rain-fed areas of Rabi crops in Punjab, KPK, Northern Balochistan and Kashmir may receive good rainfall during the period (Friday to Tuesady) that may bring relief for the standing crops that are already under stress due to low rainfall so far. A westerly wave of moderate intensity, presently giving rains over Iran/Afghanistan, is heading towards Pakistan, and very likely to enter in Balochistan on Thursday. Under the influence of this weather system, a good winter rain and snowfall is predicted in different parts of the country during coming 5 to 6 days. Northwestern Balochistan, most parts of KPK, and northern Punjab may receive 15-25 mm of rainfall during the period that would help satisfy the water demand of standing crops. Murree, Galiyat, and northern hilly areas of the country may receive 2-3 ft snowfall during next 5-6 days that would help recharge water reservoirs towards the end of winter season. All sectors of society are requested to take into account the weather & climate outlooks in scheduling their activities. |

Dry Weather Conditions likely to prevail till end of the month NDMC
Farmers may accelerate Kharif sowing
The wet and cool conditions that prevailed over most parts of the country have ceased now and no weather system is in sight that may yield rainfall over agricultural plains of the country till the end of April 2011.
Keeping in view the agro-climatic conditions of the country, farmers are advised to make efforts to avail this favorable weather window and perform field operations (Harvesting of Rabi Crops /Sowing of Kharif & Spring Crops) on priority.
Presently, temperatures are below normal. After 25th April, temperatures may rise to above 35°C over most of agricultural areas of country.
As far as the La-Nina phenomena, in Pacific Ocean is concerned, it after reaching at peak in January, is gradually decaying and may neutralize sometime in summer.
Farmers are encouraged to keep themselves updated about weather conditions to minimize the weather induced post harvest losses of their valuable crops.
